Unisex Baby Names with Strong Personality Scores
Unisex names are more popular than ever. Parents choosing a gender-neutral name often wonder: does a unisex name make a different first impression than a strongly gendered one? The perception data offers some answers.
What Counts as a Unisex Name?
For this analysis, we looked at names that appear in both the male and female sections of the Mehrabian dataset, or that score between 35 and 65 on the Masculinity dimension (the range where gender perception is ambiguous).
Top Unisex Names by Combined Score
- Leslie - Total 349 (male variant). Success 74, Warmth 71, Morality 68, Health 68, Cheerfulness 78.
- Lynn - Appears as both male and female. Male: Warmth 82, Cheerfulness 73. One of the warmest male names.
- Pat - Gender-neutral classic. Moderate scores across all dimensions.
- Robin - Nature name that works for both genders. Warm and cheerful.
- Morgan - Celtic origin, increasingly popular for girls. Balanced perception.
- Jordan - Athletic and modern. Good Health scores.
- Taylor - Professional and contemporary.
- Casey - Cheerful and approachable.
- Alex - Short, punchy, capable-sounding.
- Jamie - Friendly and warm for both genders.
How Unisex Names Score Differently
Unisex names tend to cluster near the middle on most dimensions. They rarely hit the extreme highs of strongly gendered names (like James at 109 Success or Beth at 113 Warmth). What they gain is versatility. A unisex name creates a moderate, balanced impression that avoids the gendered perception patterns that strongly masculine or feminine names carry.
This can be an advantage. In professional contexts, a gender-ambiguous name sidesteps the Success-Warmth trade-off that disproportionately affects female names.
The Perception Trade-off
The trade-off is that unisex names rarely dominate any single dimension. If you want a name that projects maximum Success or maximum Warmth, a strongly gendered name is more likely to hit those peaks. If you want a name that avoids gendered perception entirely, a unisex name is the safer choice.
